5 Signs Your Dog Needs More Exercise
Every dog needs regular exercise to stay healthy and happy, but how do you know if your dog isn't getting enough? Here are five telltale signs.
1. Destructive Behavior
If your dog is chewing furniture, digging holes in the yard, or tearing up pillows, they may be bored and under-exercised. Dogs need physical outlets for their energy, and without them, they'll find their own (often destructive) ways to burn it off.
2. Weight Gain
Just like humans, dogs gain weight when they consume more calories than they burn. If your vet has mentioned your dog is overweight, increasing exercise is one of the most effective solutions.
3. Restlessness and Hyperactivity
Does your dog pace around the house, whine, or seem unable to settle down? Excess energy that isn't burned through exercise often manifests as restlessness and hyperactivity, especially in the evenings.
4. Attention-Seeking Behavior
Constantly nudging you, barking for attention, or following you everywhere can be signs your dog needs more stimulation. Regular walks and play sessions give your dog the mental and physical engagement they crave.
5. Stiffness or Decreased Mobility
Paradoxically, less exercise can lead to decreased mobility. Dogs that don't move enough can develop stiff joints and weakened muscles. Regular, appropriate exercise helps maintain flexibility and strength.
What to Do
The amount of exercise your dog needs depends on their breed, age, and health. A general rule is at least 30 minutes to 2 hours of activity per day. Consider professional dog walking services if your schedule doesn't allow for regular walks — your dog will thank you for it.
